Rent Filipino Movies Online

pinoy dvd

One of the biggest Filipino businesses in the US is video rental. With the popularity of Netflix, a few online Filipino movie rental companies have sprouted, all of which are pretty much clones of of the Netflix business model. While Netflix and Blockbuster have some Filipino movies, stock is limited and it can take weeks to receive your movie.

Philmovies.com
Probably one of the most blatant Netflix ripoffs, it might be one of the best services if you judge a book by it’s cover. If I was Philmovies, I would change the layout to avoid a lawsuit. Apparently, they used to be Pinoyblockbuster.com. I guess there were some issues using the Blockbuster name and being in the very same industry.

Philmovies has been around since 2003 and is “One of the nation’s largest Filipino online DVD movie rental service”. Just like Netflix, Philmovies has a 2 week trial, 1-8 DVD’s out at a time, gift subscriptions, affiliate program and etc. Subscrption plans range from $9.95 to $42.95 a month.

I had to cancel my membership with Filipinomovierentals.com after only a month. Didn’t care for their service at all - week long transit times (from TX to the East Coast), absurdly long queues for popular titles and poor customer service.
Netflix has added alot more Filipino titles. Yes, fulfillment can be longer for foreign titles but usually only 2 additional days (at least to NYC).
I may try PhilMovies next if I need a better selection. I really like the fact that they have a free trial offer. And I don’t mind their ‘inspired’ layout. It’s very easy to navigate. As a longtime Netflix member, I’m comfortable with the interface!

Where I live, there aren’t even any Filipino stores so these online rentals are good cheap options.

Of course, not all of them are perfect. Just like any other businesses, they can’t please everybody. For me, I’m just happy they offer these services. Without these services, my only option would be to buy DVDs and I’m sure it’s going to be a lot more expensive buying every single movie that you want to watch.

These types of services are actually offered for convenience and for access to Filipino movies. If you’re expecting instant movie, then of course you’d be disappointed. If you are one of the lucky ones who live close to a Filipino store, then its better for you to drive and pick up your movies there.

And the price, don’t expect a whole bunch of movies for ten bucks a month. Ask yourself, where can you find movies to rent for less than 4 bucks per rental? You go to your neighborhood rental store and you’d be charged $3.50 a least plus late fees if you don’t return it on time. That’s another $3.50.

You can’t expect that you’d get the latest movies all the time either. They’re just like any other video rental store. Even if you go to Blockbuster, you won’t always get the latest ones all the time. Don’t expect them to stock more than what they have to stock so everyone will always have one available all the time, then they’d be losing money.

So far, the one that I’m most happy with is Filipino Movie Rentals. I’ve been with them for over a year now and what I’ve noticed is that the longer I’ve been a member, the better they treat me. I’ve been getting the latest release right away. Maybe some sort of VIP treatment which wasn’t like when I first started. I don’t know with the other members if its the same.
